It’s that time of year. It happens. You lay out in the sun way too long and don’t realize how burnt your skin is until you get inside and start to feel crispy! Nothing is worse than a sunburn. The only way to heal is time. It takes time to heal your skin. Even when I cover myself in sunscreen, I sometimes forget to reapply it which can causes some serious burns.
I am so happy I found some skin soothing tricks to help take some of the pain away. While it doesn’t make the burn go away, it does bring more comfort to the skin and takes away the sting.
Milk and Oats Bath
First
fill your tub with water. Make sure to not to have your bath water too warm of it will brutally sting your skin.
Second
pour a carton of milk into the tub. It will turn your water into a milky color and also cool down the temperature of the water. The proteins in milk help soothe the skin, ease discomfort and reduce heat.
Third
add in oats. Oats act as an anti-inflammatory when it is mixed with water. If you have a blender, blend it into a powder base and pour it into the bath. If you are like me and don’t feel like putting extra effort into it, just pour the oats in whole. I then let them soak in the water then grab clumps and place it on my burnt skin like a face mask.
Hang out in the bath until you feel cooled down and at ease. You will notice that your skin is not as hot which will provide you some comfort. If you have fresh aloe vera, apply it directly to your burn. This will help moisturize it. If you do not have a fresh plant, you can purchase an ale vera gel to use. I then hop right into bed and pray that the burn will heal by morning (even though I know it won’t).
Please do not….
use any lotion. The lotion traps the heat in from the sunburn and deepens the burn
use an ice pack. The temperature of ice is too cold that it actually can cause more skin damage
Bottom line, protect your skin and use Sunscreen! You can still get a tan even with Sunscreen. I always tell myself that I’d rather be less tan than have any run ins with skin cancer or wrinkly leathery skin. #lookyoungforever
